UPS batteries
UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) Batteries
UPS batteries form the last line of defense in industrial and commercial power supply: during grid outages, voltage fluctuations, or switchover events, they ensure uninterrupted operation of critical loads. VRLA technology enables maintenance-free operation, but reliability ultimately depends on manufacturing quality. Our field experience shows that the majority of operating costs stem not from the purchase price but from poor product selection. We build our product range accordingly.
VRLA Technology and UPS Applications
UPS batteries are predominantly VRLA (Valve-Regulated Lead-Acid) type, with AGM or gel electrolyte. Essential properties:
- High discharge current over short periods — bridging time is typically 5–30 minutes.
- Fast rechargeability — to prepare for the next event.
- Long float service life — at 2.25–2.30 V/cell, internal corrosion rate determines service life.
- Low self-discharge — retains charge during storage.
- Maintenance-free operation — no water replenishment, though regular condition monitoring remains necessary.
Service Life Categories
UPS battery design life is specified at 20 °C. Per the Arrhenius rule, every 10 °C increase approximately halves the expected life.
| Parameter | Standard (3–5 years) | Medium (6–9 years) | Long life (10–12+ years) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical application | Small office, networking | Server room, industrial control | Data center, telecom |
| Grid structure | Thin, calcium alloy | Medium thickness | Thick, high-purity alloy |
| Typical connector | FastOn (6.3 mm) | FastOn / bolt-down | Bolt-down (M5/M6/M8) |
| Eurobat classification | Standard | High Performance | Long Life |
Why Manufacturing Quality Is Decisive
A UPS battery bank operates in series: 12 V blocks form 36 V, 48 V, 192 V, or 480 V strings. Bank reliability is determined by its weakest element. If blocks differ in impedance or capacity, weaker elements become overloaded — leading to premature string replacement.
At established manufacturers such as FIAMM, every production step is subject to strict quality control: from alloy composition and grid casting through formation to final electrical testing. The result is exceptionally low parameter variance — the bank ages uniformly.
Based on customer feedback, batteries from less controlled processes incur substantially higher operating costs: more frequent impedance testing and block replacements.
Selection Criteria
- Discharge power (W/cell) — the basis of UPS sizing.
- Bridging time — determines block count and type.
- Design life — Eurobat category, corrected for ambient temperature.
- Physical dimensions — battery cabinet or rack capacity.
- Manufacturer background — certifications (IEC 60896, UL, VdS), field-proven reliability.
Application Areas
- Data centers and server rooms — continuous operation and controlled shutdown.
- Telecommunications — bridging power for base stations and network elements.
- Industrial control systems — protecting PLCs and SCADA systems.
- Healthcare — uninterrupted operation of medical equipment.
- Commercial buildings — uninterruptible power for offices and security systems.
Our Product Range
Our range includes 6 V and 12 V VRLA blocks from FIAMM, CSB, Adel System, and other leading manufacturers. For daily cyclic operation, consider LiFePO4 alternatives. For sizing assistance, contact us — we provide recommendations based on bridging time, environment, and available space.
Frequently Asked Questions about UPS Batteries
How do I select the right UPS battery?
Evaluate four main factors: (1) the required discharge power (W/cell) from manufacturer datasheets for given discharge times, (2) the required bridging time in minutes, (3) the design life (Eurobat categories: 3–5, 6–9, or 10–12+ years), and (4) the physical dimensions, which must fit the battery cabinet or rack. Capacity (Ah) alone is not a sufficient basis for sizing.
Why is manufacturing quality important for UPS batteries?
In a UPS battery bank, blocks operate in series — bank reliability is determined by the weakest element. If internal impedance or capacity differs between blocks, weaker elements become overloaded during discharge and overcharged during charging, accelerating degradation. Established manufacturers like FIAMM apply strict quality control from alloy composition through final electrical testing, resulting in minimal parameter variance and predictable operation.
How often should UPS batteries be replaced?
Replacement intervals depend on the Eurobat design life category and operating temperature. At 20 °C: standard blocks last 3–5 years, medium-life blocks 6–9 years, and long-life blocks 10–12+ years. Per the Arrhenius rule, every 10 °C temperature increase approximately halves expected life. Regular impedance testing and voltage monitoring help optimize replacement timing.
What is the difference between AGM and gel UPS batteries?
Both are VRLA (valve-regulated lead-acid) technologies. In AGM batteries, the electrolyte is absorbed into a fiberglass separator — enabling faster charging and higher discharge currents, making AGM the more common choice for UPS applications. In gel batteries, a silica-based gelling agent immobilizes the electrolyte — offering better deep-cycle performance. For typical UPS duty (float operation with short, high-current discharges), AGM generally offers advantages.
Can blocks of different ages be mixed in a UPS battery bank?
Not recommended. New and aged blocks differ in internal impedance and capacity. In a series configuration, aged blocks with higher impedance reach their discharge end voltage sooner, limiting the bank's available capacity. During charging, blocks with lower capacity may become overcharged, further accelerating their degradation. If a block fails, replacing the entire string is advisable.
